Just as the quantity and quality of your sleep can affect your body, taking care of your body can have a big impact on how you sleep. In a prior module, we talked specifically about activities that we do as part of our evening, or bedtime, routines. However, what you do throughout the day can also affect your sleep.

Regular physical activity helps to prevent chronic diseases such as adult-onset diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, certain cancers, osteoporosis, and depression. A life without physical activity can make you feel sleepy all the of the time, or not tired at all. Physical activity will stimulate the body helping you to be more energized and alert during the day. Beyond its mental and physical health benefits, physical activity can also help with sleep. Not only can exercise help to reduce the tension you feel but it also releases chemicals in your body that promote more restful sleep.
